About Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method

Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method is compatible with physical therapy, chiropractic medicine, osteopathic medicine, athletic training, personal training, energy work, and all types of massage modalities and bodywork techniques.

Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method centers on the physiological principles of specific muscle lengthening, increasing circulation and oxygen to the tissues, and lengthening of the superficial and deep fascia. The technique revolves around the use of a repeated, precise 2-second stretch which is far more effective in lengthening soft tissue than holding a stretch for 30 seconds or longer.

Mattes explains:

"The Mattes Method incorporates a key concept, which states that only relaxed myofascial structures will allow themselves to be optimally stretched. Adhering to Wolff's and Sherrington's Laws, the Mattes Method facilitates optimal myofascial stretching of isolated muscles without activating a protective myotatic reflex contraction. The Mattes Method utilizes a gradual stretch of no greater than 2.0 seconds, promoting full range of motion and flexibility without activating antagonistic muscle group contraction."*

Active Isolated Stretching is known to work with the body's natural physiological makeup to increase the elasticity of muscle, joints and fascia. It is used by professional and Olympic athletes, massage therapists, personal/athletic trainers and health professionals of all kinds.
